About Hogan Athletics Washington Football League

Mission and Values

Hogan Athletics hopes the WFL will encourage our students to be more self reliant by self coaching and regulating their own teams. We encourage & teach resourcefulness, creativity, team work, & leadership. We also teach the difference between sportsmanship & gamesmanship. All this while having an amazing time in competitive games with 2 referees per game. A major theme running through all Hogan Athletic programs is the understanding on how to be a Student-Athlete. The word student is always emphasized as academics always comes first.

Flag Football Coaches

Coach Goldman

Coach Goldman is originally from Brooklyn, NY. He is a skillful & talented youth athletics coach with over 15 years of coaching experience with young athletes in Basketball, Football, & Baseball. Coach Goldman was an athlete (football, basketball, & baseball) at The McBurney School in New York City earning post season honors in all three sports. Andy continued his athletic career at Franklin & Marshall College where he played 4 years in both football & baseball, earning the respect of his teammates & coaches which landed him in the F&M Hall of Fame. After graduating from F&M, Andy coached college football at East Stroudsburg University and the University of Pittsburg. He then entered media business working for ESPN, Turner Broadcasting, CBS Sports, IMG, & Fox Sports.

Coach Watts

Coach Pey Watts is a resident of Denville, New Jersey. He was a 4 year starter at Cicero North Syracuse high school and played defensive back, slot receiver, and running back. He was blessed  to play college football at SUNY Brockport for 2 years, but due to Covid, time was cut short for his career. While living in Upstate NY he has helped out with many kids grade K through 12 grow in their skills as young athletes and is more then excited to help student athletes here in Jersey. His goal is not only for the students to grow as young athletes, but to find a love for the sport similar to the way he did.

Goals of First Two Days ...

1) Learn the proper technique in passing, receiving, route running, and blocking.

2) Learn football strategies, tactics, and terminology.

3) Evaluate players' skills so we may form competitive teams for a fun & balanced league.

4) Learn the rules of game.

5) Learn and understand the WFL generic playbook and passing tree. ( A Passing Tree is a numbered passing route system used by most organized teams through the NFL). We will encourage the players to add to the playbook

which will include basic formations, basic plays, and football terminology.

6) Learn teamwork and leadership on & off the field.

7) Encourage teams to practice on their own.

8) Learn & understand how to prep for a game including pregame stretch and warmups.

If there are games canceled due to bad weather, they will be made up that Friday of the week 4:30 - 5:30

  • an email will notify all participants

The coaches form the teams to ensure competitive balance. One can request one friend and will try to accommodate but can not guarantee it.

  • Flag football flags and belt. Players wear belts with flags that hang along their sides and opponents have to pull the flags off of the ball-carrier’s belt. Every player receives a football belt and flag football flags from their coach.
  • Team shirt
  • Shorts. It’s important to wear shorts that don’t have pockets. This allows the belt and flags to be visible at all times, avoiding unnecessary penalties. It also is a safety precaution so that fingers don’t get stuck when attempting to remove the flag
  • Mouthguard. This is the only protective gear that players wear. We recommend having a backup pair in your bag, just in case.
  • Football cleats (optional). Metal cleats are not allowed in flag football.
  • Football gloves (optional). Some players prefer to use football gloves, which give extra grip to help control the ball. These aren’t required, though.

Players are allowed water and sports drinks only. Food must stay in backpack

  • games are two, 20 minute halves; 5 minute halftime
  • clock stops for injuries
  • each team has one 60 second timeout per half

playoffs begin June 11th
